Bullshit Jobs (Graeber) ● Native Son (Wright) ● Coventry (Cusk) ● Station Eleven (Mandel) ● When We Cease to Understand the World (Labatut) ● Stay True (Hsu) ¹¹ Has an enchanting sense of place (temporal and physical). The book avoids sentimentality for the most part. I would even describe the prose as clinical; despite being a memoir, there is distance between narrator and character, though it’s not cold. You can tell that the author has a great affection for who he used to be, and he treats him with gentleness and care. ● Deep Cuts (Brickley) ● Katabasis (Kuang) ²² Read this in one night procrastinating. It started off fun, though it started to drag about a third in and then ended very abruptly. A little pretentious. ● In the Skin of a Lion (Ondaatje) ● Flesh (Szalay) ³³ The sparseness of the prose and the detail of the oil-painting cover (Mars et Vénus, allégorie sur la Paix by Loius Jean François Lagrenée) contrast nicely. Its interesting how the cropping turns it into something almost lurid.
